What is it?
Insomnia is a sleep
disorder that prevents a
person from being able
to fall asleep or to
stay asleep. There can
be many reasons for
Insomnia, some serious,
like Sleep Apnea, It can
be caused by fear,
stress, anxiety,
medications, herbs,
caffeine, depression, or
bipolar disorder and
sometimes occurs for no
apparent reason. An
overactive mind or
physical pain may also
be causes.
What can be done?
There are a lot of
medicines, such as
benzodiazepines, which
over the long term can
be addictive, or
medicines such as Ambien,
and Rozarem. There are
also a lot of natural
remedies that can help
treat insomnia. First of
all stay away from
Alcohol consumption,
especially heavy
drinking as this can and
will disrupt sleep
patterns. Do not
exercise within 3 hours
before going to bed as
exercise produces
natural endorphins which
can also prevent you
from sleeping. Insomnia
may be a symptom of
magnesium deficiency, or
lower magnesium levels,
so take a magnesium,
calcium supplement as
this is a natural muscle
relaxer combination. You
can also try eating
foods high in tryptophan
such as turkey or warm
milk, as tryptophan is
the chemical that makes
people sleepy after
eating too much turkey
on Thanksgiving! Taking
a good multivitamin can
also help to keep your
minerals in balance to
help you have all the
nutrients you need to
get good sleep. Finally,
Valerian root is very
good at calming and
relaxing a person, it
acts in a similar way as
Valium does, some claim
it works and feels just
like the Valium.
Valerian smells
horrible, so be
prepared, but it does
work, and be sure to
take it at bed time at
first until you know
what effect it will have
on you as it really can
be quite potent. If none
of this works, AND you
happen to snore, ask you
doctor about being
tested for sleep apnea
which is a serious
condition that involves
temporary cessation of
breathing while we
sleep. This has serious
ramifications and very
easy remedies so be sure
to have your doctor rule
this out as a cause of
your insomnia.
