What is Gout?
Gout is caused by a
build up of Uric Acid,
usually in the joints.
It is an extremely
painful, but treatable
form of Arthritis
resulting from the
body's inability to
break down uric acid (purines),
due to the inability to
produce an enzyme
puricase. As a result,
the insoluble uric acid
is not broken down and
excreted, but builds up
in the body and forms
crystals that are shaped
like needles which
causes extreme pain.
This usually happens in
the big toe, but can
happen in other places
such as the fingers,
wrist, mid foot. Acute
pain, swelling and
redness are symptoms and
gout occurs more
frequently in men that
are of good
socioeconomic status who
eat a diet rich in meat
or alcohol, in fact 90%
of gout patients are
males. Gout may be an
indicator of kidney
disease, and uric acid
can cause kidney stones
as well. Diagnosis can
be hard, so in order to
be sure, a small amount
of fluid should be
aspirated from the joint
and checked under a
microscope for uric acid
crystals.
Is there a cure?
Well, symptoms can
usually be controlled
with either medications
such as Allupurinol, or
natural remedies and
diet changes. In fact
many people who do
change their eating
habits and add
supplements to their
diet are never bothered
by Gout symptoms again.
Stop eating red meat
more than two to three
times a week, and if you
drink alcohol, decrease
or eliminate it from
your diet until your
symptoms are gone.
Diet and
supplements
Celery has been found
by some to be as
effective as medications
in eliminating gout
symptoms. You can either
eat fresh celery three
times a day or buy the
powdered capsules if you
do not like celery.
Other important foods
and supplements include
Kyolic to help repair
tissues and to help to
restore the fatty acid
balance in a person's
body. B1 and B12 are
important to help due to
their anti-oxidant
properties. Vitamin C,
3,000mg daily to help
reduce serum uric acid
levels and finally
